St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada to Bar Harbor, Maine, USA

We awoke to a beautiful sunny morning for our last few hours in Canada. The Algonquin Fairmont Hotel is a very large hotel that was originally built in the late 19th century and then burnt down. It was rebuilt and enlarged with a new wing built in the same style as the original building.

After breakfast we took the car down to Katy's Cove, just a short distance from the hotel.

We returned to the hotel and met up with Bob and his family and drove through the centre of St. Andrews. This building, which housed the local bus company, caught my eye.

We left St. Andrews and drove the 45 kms to the Canadian Border with the USA, at St. Stephen. We needed to get the Canadian customs to stamp our temporary importation documents for the cars showing that we had 'exported' the cars from Canada. The customs officer was very helpful and in a few minutes we were on our way to the US border controls.

As we had already cleared US customs when we came into the US at Boston, we were waved through very quickly. Bob and his family, who had all flown from the UK directly to Canada, needed to get their passports stamped and this required completion of immigration forms. After about twenty minutes we were all on our way through Maine. Lovely quiet roads, through beautiful woods. Great driving!

We took a loop out to the coast and then took more back roads all the way to Bar Harbor, our overnight stop. Bar Harbor is a very popular holiday resort area for Americans and the place was quite crowded with tourists as well as hundreds of passengers from the Sea Princess cruise liner which was anchored out in the bay.

Wendy took this great photo of a beautiful four-masted yacht in the foreground and the gigantic cruise liner in the distance - the beauty and the beast?

We walked the streets and did some shopping and then decided to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain in the centre of Acadia National Park. Near the top, we drove into clouds and our view from the summit was severely restricted.

We drove back down to a lookout point where we could see the cruise liner far below us.

It's been another great day and tomorrow we start the drive down through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut to Long Island.

  1. Welcome back to the States! I'm glad you made it through customs smoothly. It looks like you've enjoyed Bar Harbor. I have never been there, but it is high up on my list of places to see.
Have some lobster for me while you are in Maine. Lobster bisque is my favorite form!
